Hey. How
you doin? So
you're
thinking about coming to Electric Sunshine
Superdisco? Good for you. You got taste kid. Style. What the
French call “a little I don’t
know what”. Pizazz! Panache! A touch of, shall we say, derring-do.
Anyhoo, let’s cut to the chase…
Electric Sunshine Superdisco – that’s “Disco
estupenda de la sol electrica” in Spanish, dude – is
an underground music festival that takes place each New Year’s
Day in the New South Wales country town of Mullumbimby. Mullum
is a green, funky, kooky, gorgeous village in the rainforest
hill hinterland 15 minutes from Byron Bay.
Parties and festivals have been etched on the landscape here
since the arrival of the rainbow children hippy generation in
the early 70s. In country halls, at bush doofs, on beaches, under
starry skies and in cool clubs and warehouses, people from all
round the world party to house, disco, techno, funk, hip hop,
electro, breaks, trance and world music. Best of all, at the
same time they can tap into the unique energy and environmental
serenity of the place.
The festival takes place in grassy green
parklands on the banks of the Brunswick River – it’s
only 5 minutes to the beach at Brunswick Heads if you need
a swim. Surrounded by canefields, dairy farms, mangroves and
a sweeping river bend, nestled under the perfectest of mountains,
Mt Chincogan, we are a world away from care.
This year there are three separate
performance spaces: the main outdoor stage, the indoor Superdisco
and the outdoor Sunshine Bar. Each stage has a full roster of
djs from midday to midnight. The 2 fully licensed bars sell well
priced drinks so there is no BYO alcohol. All ages are welcome
with ID required for access to 18+ areas.
We try to embrace all the best elements
of dance music counter culture – hedonism, community, peace, awareness, fresh
dance steps, good trainers, and so on – by putting on a
party full of colour and surprises rather than a bland corporate
event. The fancy dress of our guests is fabulous & kooky,
as are our fire twirling, stilt walking, robot dancing, angle
grinding team of roving performers. For the 3rd year we are really
proud to be associated with Mullumbimby’s famous “Spaghetti
Circus” who will bring some pirate magic to the day.
A new feature for 2007 is a tree planting
and bush regeneration project in conjunction with Brunswick
Valley Landcare. In an effort to offset the festival’s carbon use we are planting
200 local native plant species on the site. 200 lucky people
will get to make a new year’s wish as they plant a tree
and help reduce our contribution to the greenhouse problem. The
site also includes endangered river eco-systems that we will
be working to preserve for the future.
To keep you going our market village
will provide a good range of healthy eating options – lots of juices and salads and
fruit as well as coffee and energy drinks – and bits and
pieces of massage, face painting, 2nd hand shopping and other
fun. We have increased our shade this year by at least 300% but
still feel free to bring beach umbrellas, sun shades, baby pools
etc.…it’s the middle of summer so that nasty ol’ sun
can take it out of you if you’ve had a big night the night
before.
Kids are welcome – free for under
14s - because all of our visitors are respectful and respectable
and can party while still being together and responsible.
Um, what else….? There’s
camping if you book in advance. And hourly
shuttle buses from Byron Bay. There’s plenty
of parking if you do drive and it helps raise money for an organization
called UNCLE that helps local boys.
We hope you can make it. It’s heaps
of fun.
the
(drum roll) line up of superstylin' electric sun-shining
djs ::
